Principles of the Alexander Technique

The five principles of the Alexander Technique were defined by Patrick Macdonald (1910 -1991).

They are as follows (in order):

1. Recognition of the Force of Habit

2. Inhibition and Non-Doing

3. Recognition of Faulty Sensory Awareness

4. Sending Directions

5. The Primary Control

Patrick Macdonald was among the first group of teachers to be trained by F. M. Alexander himself in the 1930's, Macdonald had been receiving lessons from him since the age of 10. He went on to train hundreds of teachers himself.

He is the author of one of the best books on the Technique, "The Alexander Technique As I See It."

Patrick Macdonald explains and demonstrates the Technique in the following documentary made in 1986 (part 1 and part 2).
